Focus on Larvae, Not Just Flying Adults
Adult moths do not create the fabric holes or food webbing. The larval stage causes the damage. A useful inspection looks for larvae, silk, cases, cast skins, and the material being consumed.
Clothes moth larvae may be creamy white with a darker head. Webbing clothes moth larvae can leave silken tubes or mats, while casemaking larvae carry a portable fiber-covered case. They prefer protected areas where items remain undisturbed.
Pantry moth larvae are also pale caterpillar-like insects. They may remain in food or crawl up walls and across ceilings to find a place to pupate. That wandering behavior means an adult or cocoon can appear outside the cabinet that held the original source.
Inspect the Correct Zone

- Folded wool sweaters, coats, blankets, and felt items
- Seams, cuffs, collars, pockets, and fabric folds
- Rug edges, the underside of rugs, and areas beneath furniture

- Closet floor cracks, baseboards, vents, and lint accumulations
- Stored feathers, fur, hair, taxidermy, or animal-based craft material
Look closely at items containing wool even when the label also lists synthetic fibers. Clothes moth larvae can concentrate on the animal-fiber portion.
Pantry Moth Inspection
Check opened and unopened dry goods, including folds and seams in paper, cardboard, and thin plastic packaging. Common sources include cereal, flour, rice, pasta, nuts, dried fruit, baking mixes, spices, chocolate, pet food, birdseed, and decorative dried plants.

What the Damage Means
Clothes moth damage is often irregular and concentrated in hidden or soiled areas. Surface grazing can thin a rug or fabric without making a clean hole. Larval silk, cases, or frass attached to the material strengthens the identification.
Pantry moth evidence is usually contamination rather than a bite-shaped hole. Webbing can clump food together, and larvae or cast skins may be visible in corners of a package. A chewed-looking package is not proof by itself; beetles and rodents can also damage stored products.
Save a larva, case, or adult in a sealed container if the evidence is unclear. A county extension office or pest professional can provide a more reliable identification than a blurry wall photo.
Treatment Path for Clothes Moths
- Isolate suspect items. Place them in sealed bags or bins so larvae cannot spread during sorting.
- Separate cleanable from disposable material. Follow the garment care label. Laundering, dry cleaning, or another professionally recommended heat or cold treatment may be appropriate depending on the item.
- Vacuum hidden lint and hair. Clean closet edges, rug boundaries, shelving joints, vents, and furniture undersides. Empty the vacuum outdoors into a sealed bag.
- Store only clean items. Perspiration, food residue, hair, and lint make textiles more attractive. Use clean, tightly closed storage containers.
- Monitor after cleaning. Use a trap labeled for the identified clothes moth species and check the same inspection zones for new larval evidence.
Delicate rugs, heirloom textiles, taxidermy, or a large collection may need a textile conservator or experienced pest professional. Test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area and follow care instructions.
Treatment Path for Pantry Moths
- Find the source package. Inspect all susceptible products rather than treating only the cabinet where an adult was seen.
- Discard infested food. Seal it before moving it through the home.
- Vacuum cracks and shelf holes. Remove webbing, spilled food, larvae, and cocoons, then dispose of vacuum contents outside.
- Wash food-contact surfaces appropriately. Allow shelves to dry before restocking.
- Move replacement food into rigid, tight-fitting containers. Glass, metal, or durable plastic makes future inspection easier.
- Use a pantry-moth trap for monitoring. Continue inspecting because adults can emerge after the source is removed.
Avoid spraying food packages, dishes, or food-contact surfaces. Most pantry infestations are resolved by source removal and sanitation, not routine insecticide use.
Pheromone Trap Limits
A pheromone trap is not a universal “moth trap.” It is designed for particular species and generally attracts adult males. A clothes moth lure may not monitor a pantry moth, and a pantry moth lure will not tell you whether a sweater contains larvae.
Traps cannot remove eggs or larvae and should not replace inspection. Use them to answer practical questions:
- Is adult activity continuing after cleanup?
- Which room or closet has the most activity?
- Did catches decline after the source was removed?
- Is a stored collection showing renewed pressure?
Record trap location and dates. More traps are not necessarily better if lure placement confuses the monitoring pattern; follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Product and Pesticide Boundaries
Do not apply a product simply because its marketing says “moths.” The current label must allow the specific pest and site, such as a closet crack rather than clothing, or a pantry void rather than a food-contact shelf.
Follow all label directions, ventilation and re-entry language, state and local restrictions, and protections for children, pets, and sensitive occupants. Never treat garments, food, packaging, dishes, or surfaces unless the label specifically permits that use.
